The International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) is currently holding its annual meeting in Buenos Aires. It is the main meeting of the umbrella organisation of the international convention industry. The event is attended by André Kaldenhoff, the Division Head of Leipziger Messe Conventions, who is also a member of the Executive Board. Congress Center Leipzig (CCL) has been a member of the ICCA for exactly 20 years.
The CCL entered the convention market with the opening of the new Leipzig exhibition grounds in the year 1996, with the aim of establishing Leipzig as an attractive destination and the organisation as a reliable partner for event organisers. The CCL became a member of both the German Convention Bureau (GCB), which represents and markets Germany as a convention venue, and the umbrella organisation ICCA, which includes more than 900 members from 87 countries. The membership resulted in numerous continuing education initiatives for the CCL team and the organisation's engagement in the various associations. At the same time, the CCL also benefited from this new connection. Among other things, the ICCA database (the information source for international conventions) assisted with customer research activities, and consistently formed the basis for successful applications.
In 2005, André Kaldenhoff became the Chair of the regional ICCA "Central European Chapter" sub-group. Besides members from Germany, Switzerland and Austria, the group was subsequently joined by central and eastern European countries with their expanding convention programmes. At that time, the CCL was already established in the national convention market, was respected in the industry and the associations, and participated in the annual conference and other meetings held by the ICCA with presentations and continuing education offerings.
A very important event for the CCL was the successful application for the ICCA World Congress in 2011. The Leipzig-based organisation was able to beat out other well-known destinations such as the US and the United Arab Emirates. Hence it was the first time that convention professionals from around the world attended this key event in Germany. Approximately 1,000 participants from 70 countries and more than 100 consultants brought lasting attention to Leipzig and the CCL. The event was followed by a considerable increase in demand from international event organisers. For example, Kenes, the largest and globally leading professional convention organiser in the area of medical and natural sciences, held its first event at the CCL in 2013, and continued its collaboration this year with the convention of the European Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases (ESPID). Next year, Kenes is organising another international medical convention at the CCL with the 10th International Congress on Autoimmunity.
The traffic concept implemented during the ICCA World Congress 2011, the "Green Traffic Project", was subsequently honoured with the "Meetings Experts Green Award". This sustainable mobility concept was developed jointly with apprentices of Leipziger Messe, fairgourmet and Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe, with the result the congress participants relied mainly on public transit. After receiving the award, the concept was cited globally in publications as a best-practice example in congress logistics.
This success as a host also contributed to André Kaldenhoff's election to the Executive Board of the ICCA in October 2012, where he has been responsible for the Congress Centres, Hotels and Event Locations division together with his London colleague since that time. As part of the ICCA in Buenos Aires, which is currently taking place, he is actively involved in the new strategies of the convention industry. The anniversary of the CCL's membership will be officially recognised during that event.
