Leipziger Messe GmbH is the first German trade fair company to be certified by Green Globe. The Leipziger exhibition grounds features five trade fair halls spread out over more than 180,000 square metres of covered and open area exhibition space. It is also home to the Congress Center Leipzig (CCL), one of Europe's most modern congress and conference centers.
The Green Globe certified member recently achieved a high ranking score of 97% against the newly accredited V1.7 criteria. Proof that sustainable practices only enhance overall operations and management performance.
Steffen Jantz
, Executive Director of Corporate Communication
at Leipziger Messe GmbH
said, “We observe that show organizers and meeting planners strive towards making their events more sustainable.  So do we, and the regular Green Globe audit scheme is a great help for us to measure our results and to plan future action. The recent audit has shown that we are on the right track. Among the most effective improvements we made, there is our new heat and power plant which helps to save energy and to reduce emissions, and in the long run, it will even help us to save money.”
Leipziger Messe utilizes a cogeneration power station that produces electricity and heat on a decentralised basis using combined heat and power generation. The power station produces a total electrical capacity of approximately 800 Kilowatts that covers most of the basic electricity and heat requirements of the Leipziger Messe. The facility cost approximately one million euros to build and consists of two separate modules in a separate sub-ground equipment room. The separate modules make it easier to service electricity and heat requirements offering more flexibility for bridging maintenance intervals.
In line with the company’s environmental management plans, waste disposal is another key area targeted for improvement. Separation of refuse is encouraged before, during and after events with segregated waste sorting bins located throughout the halls and grounds.  Furthermore, three disposal islands form the central points of the waste disposal system. Lift and tilt equipment, along with additional presses for paper and residual waste, compacts waste volume. This has resulted in fewer garbage collection days and a reduction in overall CO2 emissions.
“Another success story is the introduction of fully bio-degradable materials for packaging and disposable plates and cups which our Food & Beverage catering service is using now,”
added Mr. Jantz.
Fairgourmet GmbH, a subsidiary of Leipziger Messe, supports the regional economy by working with local producers to provide catering and gourmet food services. Fairgourmet prefers reusable dishes for functions and events. If this is not possible for logistical reasons - for example, at public events offering a broad range of take-away options - dishes and beverages are served to guests in environmentally friendly bio-dishes. Cups for cold and hot beverages, as well as cutlery, are made of cellulose, while cardboard serving dishes and soup bowls are made of sugar cane waste products, and salad bowls from transparent organic plastics (PLA).
