From 21st to 25th July, the Congress Center Leipzig (CCL) is welcoming the Federation of European Microbiological Societies’ (FEMS) 5th Conference of European Microbiologists. This European umbrella organization of microbiologists unites 48 research facilities and organisations in 36 countries. Up to 2,000 delegates are expected at the CCL.

FEMS 2013 will contribute to enhancing the profile of Leipzig as a research location and to promoting it world-wide. Among the most renowned conference participants are Professor Anne Glover, Chief Scientific Advisor to the European Union, and Professor Harald zur Hausen, who in 2008 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his research into cervical cancer and the influence of certain viruses on its development.
In the CCL he will lecture on infections as a source of cancer diseases. Numerous scientific discourses, symposia and workshops will present the latest results and studies in key fields of microbiology. The conference will be chaired by Professor Hauke Harms, head of the microbiology department at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig.

The meeting will be the first CCL event to be organised by Kenes International. Kenes is one of the world’s biggest and premier professional congress organisers in the fields of medicine and natural sciences. It was the positive response to the ICCA 2011 congress that gave the CCL the chance to bid and actually win the bidding process for the FEMS 2013. The innovative traffic concept during that world congress of the meeting industry, won the CCL this year’s Meeting Experts Green Award in the category ‘Sustainable Event’.

Kenes International is known for favouring long-term strategic partnerships and for returning to congress cities and centres that have once stood the test. Consequently, in May 2015 the CCL’s calendar already features another Kenes event – the European Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases (ESPID) congress. 3,500 delegates are expected for this.
